Empire, Hunger [Games], and Hope

katniss-everdeen-the-hunger-gamesScreenings: Post Production Pastoral Reflections Week 4

Back to the big screen and the written page… The Hunger Games took reality TV and the power hungry empire to the end of a trajectory at least one hundred years in the future in post-cataclysmic North America. The world has drastically changed. Power has been firmly and openly consolidated in The Capitol and 12 Districts do the manual labor needed to keep the empire in business. Children are reaped as tribute from their families and communities for the entertainment of the masses and to remind the Districts that there is no hope in rebellion… Or is there?

Can hope rise from the ashes of despair? Empires have lorded it over the people from time immemorial and people have responded to unlikely heroes in order to return balance to the forces at play. There is always hope, but Empire doesn’t like being   subverted or ignored… Jesus did both and look what happened to him…

“The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.” Matthew 13:33

We Gather and Sing …

Introit                                Exultate Justi  byJohn Williams

Gathering Hymn                     A Mighty Fortress Is Our God   (This Hymn was originally a protest song for the protestant reformation as they protested the unbalanced power that Rome held over its constituents.)

Pray:  Affirmation From Romans

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
1001186_1334346860309_fullShall tribulation or distress,
or persecution or famine,
or nakedness or peril or sword?

In all things we are more than conquerors
through the One who loved us.
We are sure that neither
death nor life,
nor angels, nor principalities,
nor things present, nor things to come,
nor powers, nor height, nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Thanks be to God!  Amen.

My personal mission is to translate the life and teachings of Jesus to the next generation of peace and justice seekers in and around Burlington Vermont. I’m always up for a friendly argument, a free hug, or to be available as a compassionate ear or shoulder to cry upon. I have an insatiable curiosity for ideas and love to talk about theology, religion, politics, science, or whatever is on your mind. My current passion is about peeling back the centuries of church tradition in order to find the root of our faith in the teachings and ministries of Jesus so that it can be put into practice. After fifteen years of professional ministry with young people I still love watching a newly empowered Child of God set out to change the world!
