After Sunday: Worth-Ship

We began to roll out the web site for First UMC Burlington today (umcburlington.com).  We are homing in on the three statements that define who we are as a Christian Church.  First of all, we are “A Worshiping Community”.  What does it mean to “worship”?  And what makes a “Worship Service” meaningful to you?praise_worship

Zach Hoag shared a quote from N. T. Wright on Worship (Worth-Ship).  Rachel described worship as the experience of being “re-charged”.  Adam said worship can happen anywhere for him – but especially when there is music involved.  Mark dug into the Greek word used most often in the Christian Testament that is translated with the English word “worship”.  The word is προσκυνέω (proskuneo).

God is “high and lifted up”.  God is also here – among us and within us.

What are the most meaningful experiences you have had in worship?

Mark Demers

Want to talk about sex, politics, spirituality? So do I. I grew up in a religious home in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Our country was reeling from assassinations and the devastation of the Viet Nam War. Looking for something beautiful, I got a degree in music, married the love of my life and had children. Looking for God, I then went to seminary. Looking for something that might transform the world, I became a local church pastor. Now, I’m always looking for people who want to talk about important things. I cherish conversations with emerging leaders, people who are antsy to try an idea they believe would change the world for the better. I’d would love to hear from you.
