Anything New?

“What has been will be again …” Ecclesiastes 1:9

We are trying something new – something that we have ever tried before. It’s a “First” for us; but it has been done hundreds – maybe thousands times before,

Some things do happen for a “first time” – but even those things depend on some previous knowledge, some prior potentiality.

We have high hopes for a new year – peace, justice, opportunity, security. Is there any reason to assume there will be more of any of those things in 2015 than in 2014?

In my experience as a prison chaplain I remember the inmates often reminding each other to “keep it real”. The point they were making was simply this – that there is nothing wrong with dreaming and planning; but keep your feet on the ground and be realistic. Don’t assume anything around you will change if you are not willing to change yourself. If we aren’t willing to change then we can be pretty sure what has been will be again.

Are you willing to change?

Want to talk about sex, politics, spirituality? So do I. I grew up in a religious home in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Our country was reeling from assassinations and the devastation of the Viet Nam War. Looking for something beautiful, I got a degree in music, married the love of my life and had children. Looking for God, I then went to seminary. Looking for something that might transform the world, I became a local church pastor. Now, I’m always looking for people who want to talk about important things. I cherish conversations with emerging leaders, people who are antsy to try an idea they believe would change the world for the better. I’d would love to hear from you.
