Who Is A Christian?

“Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13;35 –  New Living Translation.

Are you a Christian? How would anyone know? Are you willing to accept as a sister or brother in the faith anyone else who claims to be a Christian?

Since the tragic incident at Charlie Hebdo in Paris a number of mosques and Muslim businesses have been the target of grenades and shootings – thus far there are no casualties. But should the perpetrators of these acts of revenge claim to be Christians would you accept them into the family of faith?

J. K. Rowling and Rupert Murdoch have been going at each other in the Twittersphere after Murdoch tweeted that Muslims “must be held eresponsible”. Rowling counters with questions about Christian responsibility for the Inquisition.

Forget about being our brother or sister’s “keeper”; when do we accept the other as sister or brother – period? What are the criteria?

Think for a moment … and accept this good news: You are loved. And because of this fact, you are free to love others.

Yes, you are.

A blessed Tuesday.

Want to talk about sex, politics, spirituality? So do I. I grew up in a religious home in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Our country was reeling from assassinations and the devastation of the Viet Nam War. Looking for something beautiful, I got a degree in music, married the love of my life and had children. Looking for God, I then went to seminary. Looking for something that might transform the world, I became a local church pastor. Now, I’m always looking for people who want to talk about important things. I cherish conversations with emerging leaders, people who are antsy to try an idea they believe would change the world for the better. I’d would love to hear from you.
