January 25 – Forced to Believe, or Free to Search?

Raising children is like driving on icy roads. They don’t always end up where we had hoped no matter how hard we try to steer in one direction. Jesus manifests this quality of pre-teen unpredictability. He isn’t always where his parents think he is and he doesn’t always end up quite where they thought he should be.

How much spiritual pressure should we apply to our children? When does invitation become manipulation? When does “instruction” become coercion? What do we teach them, and what do we let them discover for themselves?

The Scripture: Luke 2:41-52

Message: Forced to Believe, or Free to Search?  (There may not be a manuscript for this week. We are working on it!)

Mark Demers

Want to talk about sex, politics, spirituality? So do I. I grew up in a religious home in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Our country was reeling from assassinations and the devastation of the Viet Nam War. Looking for something beautiful, I got a degree in music, married the love of my life and had children. Looking for God, I then went to seminary. Looking for something that might transform the world, I became a local church pastor. Now, I’m always looking for people who want to talk about important things. I cherish conversations with emerging leaders, people who are antsy to try an idea they believe would change the world for the better. I’d would love to hear from you.
