MC Hammer said We’ve got to pray just to make it today!
First off, what does it mean to you to “make it” today? It may be that you need to pray just to get to a point where you know what your goals are.
Then, there’s “today”. Is that enough for you – to make it today? (Give us this day our daily bread … Don’t worry about tomorrow …) After all, this is the age in which we are told that we need to save more for our retirement, to insure we are well-cared for tomorrow. Is making it today enough for you?
Most important, there’s “pray”. What does it mean to “pray”? Christians are often made to feel guilty because we don’t pray more. It’s that II Chronicles 7:14 line that both inspires us and condemns us: If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins and heal their land. That’s a tall order – to heal the land. All Hammer wants to do is just make it today!
Perhaps prayer has to be understood as part of a larger package – one that includes humility, discipline, and a willingness to admit to ourselves and to God that we can’t do it all by ourselves. And maybe the big picture of healing for the land begins with the deeply personal healing for your soul.
Whether it’s listening for the still, quiet voice of the Spirit within, or dancing exuberantly in joy and praise, make it today.
A blessed Tuesday.
