I Promise …

I was at a meeting recently with other United Methodist Clergy. Our district superintendent was present with us, and we talked for a while about Church Membership. We were reminded of the vows of membership in a UM Church:

As members of this congregation will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, and your service? That’s the question we are asked; and the right answer is “I will.”

Have you ever made a promise that you broke? Have you ever uttered a vow that you didn’t live up to? I suppose we could ask: Have you ever made a resolution you did not keep? Ahhh … those dreaded resolutions!

Maybe try something today. Make a promise. You don’t need to tell anyone. Make it such that it is doable, but will require some intentionality and discipline on your part. Let it be just for today.

Jesus said: “You are the salt of the earth.” Make a vow today such that the world will taste better for your having made it. And then be sure to keep it.

A blessed Tuesday.

Want to talk about sex, politics, spirituality? So do I. I grew up in a religious home in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Our country was reeling from assassinations and the devastation of the Viet Nam War. Looking for something beautiful, I got a degree in music, married the love of my life and had children. Looking for God, I then went to seminary. Looking for something that might transform the world, I became a local church pastor. Now, I’m always looking for people who want to talk about important things. I cherish conversations with emerging leaders, people who are antsy to try an idea they believe would change the world for the better. I’d would love to hear from you.
