Asking for Laughter

You know that verse from the Bible – “Rejoice in the Lord always…” Philippians 4:4.

I have to say there are days I have a hard time “rejoicing” – in the Lord, or in anything else for that matter. But I am reading Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, and there is a section in the book where an old monk/priest has given instructions. Some think of him as a saint; others think he is actually the Satan. But one of the things old Father Zossima encourages us to do is ask God for laughter.

This is not an attempt to escape the problems of the world or the pain of our lives. It is only to say that even as pain and disappointment are an inevitable part of life, joy is a gift from God and it is worth asking for it every now and then.

I hope there is something in your day today that will cause you to chuckle, giggle, or burst out with a hearty laugh from deep down. There is no denying the suffering in the human family; but remember to be on the make for the gift of joy. Receive it and share it with others.

A blessed Tuesday.

Mark Demers

Want to talk about sex, politics, spirituality? So do I. I grew up in a religious home in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Our country was reeling from assassinations and the devastation of the Viet Nam War. Looking for something beautiful, I got a degree in music, married the love of my life and had children. Looking for God, I then went to seminary. Looking for something that might transform the world, I became a local church pastor. Now, I’m always looking for people who want to talk about important things. I cherish conversations with emerging leaders, people who are antsy to try an idea they believe would change the world for the better. I’d would love to hear from you.
