Temptation – The Story of our Life

“Don’t eat the bread,” she said sternly to us. Then she left.

It was warm, just out of the oven, sitting on the counter begging to be sampled; so we convinced ourselves we could each have one slice. We lathered the butter on. One slice apiece became two, then three – and then the loaf was gone.

How good are you at resisting temptation? What is it that gets you – food? Shopping? A hobby that has become an obsession? What about the temptation to complain, or be negative, or … you name it.

Temptation is part of the story of our lives, and we will be talking more about it this week at First UMC Burlington’s Thursday evening “Facebook Live” Bible Study. You can join us at 9 PM by going to the church Facebook page and clicking on the link.

Meanwhile, pick the thing that you will resist today – just for today! And let Jesus be your inspiration.

A blessed Tuesday.

Want to talk about sex, politics, spirituality? So do I. I grew up in a religious home in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Our country was reeling from assassinations and the devastation of the Viet Nam War. Looking for something beautiful, I got a degree in music, married the love of my life and had children. Looking for God, I then went to seminary. Looking for something that might transform the world, I became a local church pastor. Now, I’m always looking for people who want to talk about important things. I cherish conversations with emerging leaders, people who are antsy to try an idea they believe would change the world for the better. I’d would love to hear from you.
