They say it is the perfect exercise, especially if you don’t have a lot of room. If you don’t know what a “burpee” is, watch this. When I do three sets of 10 burpees per set my heart is racing and I’m breathing hard. It’s a good thing to have some part of your exercise routine bring you to the edge of your cardiovascular cliff – a few minutes of extreme exertion can be worth an hour of moderate exercise.
When is the last time you did something “extreme” as far as your spiritual discipline is concerned? Pastor Rachel has our youth do a 30 hour fast every year. The season of Lent invites us to embrace some discipline that tests the metal of our spiritual condition, reminiscent of Jesus’ forty day fast in the wilderness. It can be giving something up, or taking something on that makes you trust God more, rely on your faith, or cause you to be spiritually “out of breath”. It doesn’t have to last 40 days. In fact, just like physical exertion, perhaps you will have the opportunity today for your spirit to go all out for a few moments. If such a moment comes along, don’t miss it!
