A Program, Not a Magic Trick

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if religion magically made all your problems disappear? That’s what some people think it is! And when it doesn’t work that way – when they realize that religion requires discipline, purpose, humility, waiting, serving and studying, they want out.

Jesus says “the kingdom of heaven” is a treasure so valuable it is worth giving up everything else in order to have it. But Jesus doesn’t wave a wand and suddenly make all our greed, selfishness, fear, worry and prized possessions disappear. One of the Twelve-Step pieces of literature says we first have to be willing and and then we have to act. In doing so, “we make room for a Power greater than ourselves to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. We need only open the door to let the healing begin.”

Open the door – even just a crack – and see what God can do.

A blessed Tuesday.

Want to talk about sex, politics, spirituality? So do I. I grew up in a religious home in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Our country was reeling from assassinations and the devastation of the Viet Nam War. Looking for something beautiful, I got a degree in music, married the love of my life and had children. Looking for God, I then went to seminary. Looking for something that might transform the world, I became a local church pastor. Now, I’m always looking for people who want to talk about important things. I cherish conversations with emerging leaders, people who are antsy to try an idea they believe would change the world for the better. I’d would love to hear from you.
